That actually happened.
But seriously, keeping motivated is a struggle for everyone. As winter sets in and the days get shorter it becomes harder and harder to drag yourself away from the comfort of your couch. Below are some of the strategies I have used to get myself motivated to hit up the gym. I hope you find these valuable & start making a plan to achieve your goals!
1. Get motivated by setting a clear goal
“I will do _______________ by this date” A nice clear goal should be your number one motivator. From that goal you then need to create “mini” goals that will ensure you complete your goal by the specific date. For example: I will run the 5km Run Melbourne on the 13thof October. My mini goal will be to use the “Couch to 5k IPhone App” till I can run the full amount.
2. Get motivated by having a DEXA Scan.
A DEXA scan is a full body scan that looks are your body fat percentage (it also checks your bone density). If you are in Melbourne, follow this link. You can book an appointment online. Buy a two pack, get one done today and book the next appointment for 6 months time. Boom shak-a-lakka!! See what you can achieve in 6 months!
3. Get motivated by finding a Gym Buddy
Get yo' self a gym buddy! preferably someone who is motivated and will drag your ass out of bed to be there. If you commit to someone else there is less chance youll bail on them & its always nice to have someone to burpee with.
4. Get motivated by betting money on your progress.
If you have a rich friend, or someone who is encouraging you to do get fit, tell them that for every kg you lose- they have to pay you a certain amount of money.
Alternatively, give someone money (someone you trust, not old mate drug dealer down the road) and tell them to give you back the money only once you’ve reached your goal weight.. or a certain amount per kilo. Otherwise they keep it. (Ill totally volunteer to be this person)
5. Get motivated by getting a totes awesome Personal Trainer.
Personal trainers not only make you commit to a session per week, but they keep you accountable and ensure you are making progress. I know a pretty good one.. winky wink.
6. Get motivated by getting married!
A wedding is a brilliant event to get in shape for! Even if its not yours. The good thing about weddings is that you usually have a decent amount of time to get ready for them. Start now!
7. Get motivated by taking Progress Shots
Oh yes, the old #selfy. So classy- yet effective. (and don’t worry, you don’t have to publish them to all the creeps on social media- theyre just for you) I find progress shots give you some positive reinforcement and a great way to track progress. They are far more reliable then the scales.
8. Get motivated by committing publicly
“Hey everybody! Im getting ripped up!” once people know, they’ll ask you about it, this will keep you accountable and hopefully avoid you saying “well.. I was going great, but then a Tim Tam jumped down my throat and the only six pack I’ve seen this month is in my fridge” But seriously, start a blog, or make an instagram account, maybe even a facy group- ill follow you fo sho!
9. Get motivated by using Social media
This ties into the point above, but get around it. People love that stuff. I love following people on instagram & facebook its motivating as anything.There are heaps of wicked iphone apps you can use to help you get motivated too. I could name some, but this guy has already done it for me so check out this linky dink. You could even get a bunch of friends together & create a secret facy group where you can motivate each other... even better- add in the money motivator to this. Everyone chips in, the person with the best progress in 6 months gets it all!
Not for everyone, but hey! It is something to work towards. You may even get to look like a total noob like yours truly below..
Get motivated by mini rewards
Oh yesss.. hello Tony Bianco! Set yourself up a bit of a motivation chart, every 10 exercise classes you attend you get to buy yourself something new.
Or if you are a lad, if go to the gym everyday this week you can get yourself some.. erh? boy things.. haha.. but im lost here...
Oh so cliche`, “harder, faster, stronger” “you can do it long time” “no pain no gain” – you’ve heard it all before, but if that stuff works, then print it out and stick in on your wall- on your phone background- or in the toilet, anything to encourage you to push that bit harder.... see what I did there, #totescheeky
But honestly, find people you find inspiring & read their blogs, websites, get into pininterest, anything you need to do to keep your motivation running high.
I hope this has been helpful & gets you thinking about ways to get motivated to make a change. I believe that although the points above may give you the kick start you need, internal motivation is the key to long term success, you need to want the change for you, so that YOU will be leaner, stronger, healthier person.
