Don't Let Your Diet Go On Vacation When You Do.. A Guest Post!

Good Morning bloggies!
I graduated college on Saturday morning so summer has officially started for me and I thought what better way to start the summer than with a guest post!
I spoke with Cole Millen from Cole's Mill: Unique thoughts and perspectives about health and travel a  few weeks ago about featuring him on Finding Fitness and we decided it was a good fit! After reading his blog I knew instantly that he had a place here! Cole Millen is an avid traveler and foodie who never forgets that life's best memories are made through real life apprehension of legitimate "experiences." His insight on traveling and healthy eating is helpful to all of us whether we're jet setters or road trippers! I hope that you enjoy the information that Cole provided for us as much as I did!

Don't Let Your Diet Go on Vacation When You Do
Vacationers frequently return home packing more than their suitcases and a few souvenirs. It is common for people to return home carrying a few extra pounds and have no idea of how they crept on. Eating in restaurants and staying in hotels can cause weight gain because travelers get out of their normal daily routine. Fare in restaurants is also significantly higher in calories than food prepared at home. If you are looking for ways to prevent weight gain from being an unpleasant side effect of an upcoming trip, there are several ways that you can retain control over your diet while on vacation.
Getting a good start to avoiding unnecessary calories is recommended. For instance, eating a good, healthy meal before you even leave for the airport. Make sure to bring some healthy snacks with you to keep yourself from grabbing the high sugar and fatty foods they offer. Ask for bottled water on the plane rather than calorie-rich beer, wine or cocktails. When you get to the airport, walk around and enjoy the various sights rather than sit somewhere and eat. While on layovers, seek out salads, fruit cups and low calorie menu items such as baked chicken for sustenance.
Making the right hotel choice can also have an impact on what you eat while on vacation. It is usually best to select accommodations in vibrant, thriving sections of the city so that you can have easy access to a variety of eating establishments. In the past, I have had trouble finding hotels that accommodated my healthy lifestyle and couldn’t find much accurate information on their websites. Recently, I found a great site that listed reviews for Las Vegas hotels regarding not only their amenities and services, but also the restaurants in the surrounding area. This made is so much easier for me to plan my vacation ahead and ensure that I would be able to maintain my ways both in and out of the hotel.
It's also a good idea to get a room with a mini fridge and a microwave so that you can have a store of healthy snack items on hand. Some weight conscious travelers also pack a small crockpot so that they can prepare simple, healthy meals of chicken and vegetables in their rooms.
Most modern restaurants have their menus posted online, and checking them thoroughly before making a dining decision can help you make good choices. Eating a small snack such as an apple before going to dine is an excellent way to prevent overindulging on high calorie foods.
At the restaurant, you substitute vegetables whenever possible for starch-heavy side dishes. Another easy trick is to avoid ordering foods that are white, brown or beige in color because these are generally very high in fat and calories. Brighter food has more nutrition and less fat. Another thing that you can do that will eliminate hundreds of calories from your meal is to decline to eat the skin on your meat entree.
You should also pay close attention to preparation methods when selecting items from a menu. Steamed, grilled, baked and broiled items are generally much more preferable than foods that have been battered, buttered, basted or fried. Seafood restaurants are excellent choices for diners seeking to minimize fat and calories while maximizing nutritional benefits. You can't go wrong with a nice piece of steamed fish and a fresh garden salad drizzled with raspberry vinaigrette. Also, taking a regular multivitamin after a meal is an excellent way to ensure that your nutritional needs are being met.
